Unit 3

I have always paid attention to people's spiritual world, behavior state and meaning of life. How to examine the world and the relationship between myself and the world is my key goal. This semester mainly focuses on group relations and the exploration of repetitive and meaningless events.

Group portraits have always been a subject of interest to me. On the one hand, I like the elusiveness of group events. At the same time, I also like the vulgarity and tension between the vientiane world.  I focus on the absurd colors of the world.

First, I painted oil paintings to show the absurd states of modern society.  And I also made some animations to show continuous movements with various postures of the human body.  These animations all use repetition and looping patterns to show a state of consumption, which seems absurd and dramatic.  It's like a game life.

I like to study some postures and unconscious movements of the human body, which provides some inspiration and material for my creation

This work is called "The Absurd World"

“They are all in a cage, they are all trapped, they have no soul but an empty shell"

People blindly choose to follow the trend and become thoughtless, just an empty shell.  People have no right to choose and are in a state of being chosen.  What is more terrifying than product homogeneity is the homogeneity of people. What is more dangerous than low-price competition is people's misplaced choices. What is more alarming than the wave of corporate failures is the wave of people's elimination.

The people being sold symbolize that people have no right to choose, and the people in the trash can symbolize people who are eliminated and abandoned by society at any time.  I used this form to show the absurd world .

And I continue to make some animations

The first animation was called Tetris life.

I want to use classic tetris to show the plight and status of contemporary people:

if you choose to fit in with the crowd you wil disappear, drift with the stream, and lose the uniqueness of the individual. In other words, the disappearance of the square does not mean the death, it just melts into the ocean of society. If you don't fit in you will be isolated because people are social animals and loneliness will kill you.

This form of subsidence also reflects people's powerlessness towards reality. Each square is pieced together by a human body, which slowly falls down in different states and postures, and then slowly transforms into squares, just like people ntegrate into a group, gradually losing their strong personality.

Tetris has no levels, and if you want to score higher, you have to play on an infinite loop. It means that there is no real sense of clearance, is the player to vercome all kinds of difficulies to continue to play. As in life, there is no escape from this cycle. On the road of life people are constantly challenging the limit, challenge themselves, there is no end. Mistakes accumulate and you need to work hard to make up for them.

I will put it in the exhibition, like a game console, maybe I can make it into a game in the future.

I put my animation into an old TV, because the Tetris is a classic game. It’s like putting the audience in the scene of this game. When you sit in front of a game console and see a person falling down into piles of squares, you will think about the absurdity of the world and think about your own position, how you feel. If it can be actually a game in the future, I will create a corner and then people can sit down and play it a bit like a teenager’s bedroom.

The second animation is called reincarnation.

I use the principle of a kaleidoscope to put the crowd into a narrow space. They rotate and roll like a kaleidoscope, as if they have no soul, just an empty shell.  Then repeat and repeat, the endless loop has to go on.  Life doesn't matter whether it begins or ends. All life is reincarnation. The characteristic of a kaleidoscope is that it needs to be continuously rotated to change. Just like our life, it requires hard work to change.

The third animation is called loop.

It is as if a person walked into the mirror world, and it seemed that all of it was himself, and it seemed to be a group of people gathered together.  What I want to express is the homogeneity of human beings, it is impossible to distinguish who is who.  We are doing the same actions and behaviors, we are in the same state.  As it keeps spinning and shrinking, I use a way of looping in and out to show people's ambivalence and an infinite loop of life mode.

I like to make this kind of repetitive animation, it seems a little meaningless, but a little witty and interesting.

I am going to play this video on a projector. I put it in a black room. People walking in from the outside seems to have entered this animation.

I once saw an exhibition. From the outside, it was a dark green wall with a door in the middle.  The artist projected the video on the wall of the room inside, so it looks like a corridor from the outside, and as the audience slowly approaches, it is like walking into the corridor, which is very immersive.  .  At first, I thought the people and scenes inside were real, and the audience seemed to merge with the people in the video. So after I made this animation, I thought about how to integrate myself into this scene

Olafur Eliasson: In Real Life

His works evoke people’s perception of the world around them, showing Eliasson’s exploration of society and the environment, blurring the clear boundary between concrete people and environmental extremes, and implying the current living environment of smugglers and their presence in society.  The role played in.

His work  Let the visitors become part of the work, in this fascinating installation you will see how you feel, the people around you and the world around you.  All the environments are closely related to the works. This alternation of an installation also includes the visitors as part of the exhibition.

I also want visitors to be part of my work when they look at my work.

And I also try to make some shadow devices.

This is based on the principle of the merry-go-round. Human bodies in different states are placed around, and the device keeps rotating, repeating this process.  I plan to place it in the middle of a black room with walls on all sides, and then use spotlights to project it on the wall, so that the shadow of the device will continue to rotate on the wall.

When the audience walks into the room, the audience's shadow will be mixed with the installation's shadow. At this time, we can't tell where we are, and we can't see each other's state.  This blurs the clear boundary between the concrete person and the environment, and blends the shadow of the visitor with the shadow of the installation, creating an overall atmosphere, and making the visitor a part of the work.

I also tried to make some gifs and put them into the real scene.

I like to take some photos of the body. It seems that the body can convey a lot of emotions. Even without speaking, the viewer can feel and experience this state.  I use the body as a symbol. In this group of photos, the headless body seems to lose its characteristics and become a symbol.  Through this form, I re-feel myself, find balance through myself, and settle down to think.  I also combined my experimental images with my animations, showing a real and illusory world, and it has become an absurd story.

I want to present some repetitive and consumption events in this world in a way that is absurd and bizarre at the same time romantically.  I use some common things and symbols to map people's behavioral states.  In fact, many behaviors of people in modern society are meaningless. This process is constantly being consumed. What we can perceive is only this process in progress.  Just like the work I have always made, it seems like a meaningless endless loop and repetition, but I think this process is still romantic and interesting.
