Andrew wyeth

He is an American neo-realist painter who mainly paints tempera and watercolor.  His paintings have a kind of "abstracted abstract" painting elements, his works through the natural surface sink into it, into the subjective ideals and aspirations of individuals. This happens to coincide with me, and I also pursue the integration of objective reality and subjective feelings. His works are delicate,  with sad cold emotional appeal, I like to find inspiration in the simplest ordinary things.️

Antony Gormley

His sculptures gave me some inspiration.  His greatest characteristic is that he is good at using "human figure" to create. Through the study of human body structure. Anthony Gormley takes sculpture as the carrier of memory and change, which gives the material a new image vitality.

"I think the weight of the work still lies in the subjective personal moment, which can mobilize the senses and create such opportunities for other thinkers," he said "When you look at this sculpture, what you can talk about is not what it replaces or symbolizes, but how it affects the environment and how it makes you feel."

The image of sculpture expresses a specific moment of Gormley himself, and such expression is just intended to arouse the spontaneous subjective response of the audience. For this, I have the same idea. The feeling of the works is very important. My work is also the expression of my or most people's specific moments and emotions.

Vilhelm Hammershoi

Bedroom, 1890,  oil painting

He is a Danish painter. I like the quietness of his pictures. He seldom draws more than two figures. This is very similar to me. My paintings are almost all single characters. Maybe this is unconscious or subconscious.I like his simplified and extreme color use and flat and direct composition, which has a great influence on the composition and color use of my paintings.️

Without Contact, 1892, oil painting on canvas

In this work, Hammershoi shows an important theme throughout his artistic career, that is, the image expression of the lone traveler in the self world, and the lone traveler in the painting is either alone or with others. If there is any other meaning in the painting, it is that there is no real communication. It also shows the real life state of the society at that time - the backward traditional life has been abandoned, but the shadow of the traditional concept always affects the people at that time. The main direction of my research is that people are in the self world, often alone, refusing to communicate and self closing.

Bruno valbert

Valbert said: "my works don't want to use actions to express the story, just want to wake up an emotion, so I don't want too many actions and shapes to disturb this emotion. If the shape is too fancy or too strange, the emotional things will weaken, and the theme and soul of my works are the inner things, so I don't want too much exaggeration and noisy things in the shape."

He is an Italian wood carving artist. I saw his exhibition in Hangzhou last year, and I particularly like his simple, concise and quiet emotion. The ethereal silence that goes directly to the deep heart of his works is very precious. He made me pay more attention to the depiction of emotions. I wanted to make my works touch and resonate with viewers.️ In addition to the complexity of the outer surface, his works strengthen the power of inner emotions.  This kind of feeling of falling into self and dissociation can impact the viewer's heart instantly. He infused the spirit into the wooden body, and at the same time expressed his emotions.  Every woodcarving human body seems to have melancholy feelings, and the lonely soul silently tells the loneliness and loneliness of the heart.

Sanyu

He is one of my favorite Chinese painter, he exaggeration to draw the human body structure, constant pursuit of perfection is contracted, the body with the most simple line and color performance. Before my painting is partial realism, arguably Sanyu influenced me a lot, he is my the first step on the road to the abstract painting, I started to simplify my line and color.️

Harano horse, 1950s,  oil painting, 80×130cm                     my photograph, 2019

Sanyu does not pay attention to calligraphy and painting theory, but follows his nature and interests, painting his likes and dislikes, painting his mood. Painting is a kind of emotional natural vent for Sanyu. His oil painting is very close to my photography. Changyu's animal works mostly show the bleak situation of vast land, ancient road, or yellow sand road. In the boundless and open sky, there is only a small lonely animal like a drop in the sea. All the viewers feel the loneliness and desolation of the old age of this stranger.

The lonely elephant, oil painting, 80×130cm, 1960s

It was a tiny elephant, galloping in the boundless desert. Chang Yu points at the elephant with her fingers, smiles and says, "this is me."

My motherland

I am in a foreign country

Looking at you affectionately

But my sadness and loneliness

Let me never come back

When I come again

The world has changed

Edvard Munch

Edward Munk's paintings have a strong subjective and depressed mood. Most of them take life, death, love, terror and loneliness as themes, express their feelings and emotions with strong contrast lines, color blocks, concise and exaggerated models. Strong colors are often the way I like to use them. I always pay attention to the emotional depiction of the individual.

His paintings and printmakings enable me to clearly feel the emotions he wants to express.  His pictures combine reality with fantasy. It's very similar to my work

Munk always wanted to express the inner psychological state of the characters, and the characters in his paintings presented the posture that can best express this state. The characters he painted are like the characters in a stage play. It is likely that each specific posture represents a specific emotion, similar to a certain body language. Because Edward Munk's characters are all responsible for expressing a certain psychological state, the men and women he created are not realistic. I have a similar way of expression in the process of creation. My characters are more abstract and have no specific image characteristics. This may be more able to express some emotions, so that the audience has resonance.

  The Sgream, 1895, 90.8×73.7cm

Giacometti  Alberto

Three walkers II, 72 x 32 x 31.5cm, bronze, 1984

Alberto Giacometti is a sculptor, painter, Sketcher and poet. In his early years, he had drawn sketches and oil paintings, and the greatest achievement was sculpture. After the Second World War, the works reflect people's psychological fear and loneliness.

His works integrate the simple human image with the space that erodes their human nature, and express deep loneliness, modern people's anxiety and deprived traditional comfort in the way of fable.

The Glade ,1950, 58.7×65.3×52.7cm, bronze

In the face of his works, what I feel is not only the plight of human nature after the war, but also the plight of the individual in the city in the mass society -- in the vast and complex social, political and architectural structure, everyone is unified and lives in a state of psychological isolation. The social problem that I pay close attention to is about the individual's predicament in the society. Because of various reasons, people want to escape the loneliness produced by reality, and they can't escape the struggling behavior.

Giacometti created the most painful and isolated metaphor. These rough, shrunken surfaces, blank, expressionless faces, and far-reaching dimensions make these tiny bodies show a desolate distance from each other and the viewer himself

Louise Bourgeois

"The world misunderstood my work, I am not surrealism, I am an existentialism" -- Louise Bourgeois

Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010), a famous French artist, is famous for his large-scale installation works. Her works are inspired by the memories of his childhood life in France. Taking the body as the main form, she explores various human centered themes, including family, sex and body, child abuse and subconscious, etc. From poetic paintings to large-scale installation works, she can express fear in the form of body, expel and recall them in various forms. Sex, love and abandonment are the core of her work.

mom,

Louise’s themes are self-defense and self-protection, and she is as concerned about physical or psychological threats as I am.  She has created a 35 foot tall steel spider, called her mother. For the artist, the spider is the representative of her hard-working mother. The spider spends a lot of time every day repairing and weaving her web. It also represents the artist herself. She is making her own web, constantly separating art from her body.  And my work also has something about the web.  I want to express a way of self-protection while being bound. She gives me a lot of inspiration.

Her sculptures are full of originality, passion, wisdom and strong female consciousness. She has always focused on people who need to be protected in a world of strife. This sense of protection is often interpreted as a shelter or a home.  I'm also learning from her methods to create a closed space.  Similar to her 1991-2008 "cells" series. Each chamber of secrets represents different forms of pain and fear, physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual and rational.  The viewer has a kind of peeping fun for each chamber, and these chambers stimulate people's senses and memories. She expressed her rich inner feelings in a completely personal way, showing the human desire and alienation, death and fear, so in her device space, I can feel the morbid depression and the sense of humor to eliminate the depression.

Francis Bacon

He is good at using the rough and strong strokes to express the horror, brutality, loneliness, excitement and anger of the characters in the picture. Bacon's brushwork contains inner imagination and emotion. Although the image of the character is dismembered or even distorted, it still maintains a recognizable image. In Bacon's works, the image is no longer the repetition of reappearance, but shows people the true face of fate. Bacon described his work as "trying to visualize an emotion.". He likes the theme of loneliness and distress. The characters he drew became a kind of uncomfortable horror on the screen, and the huge pain hit the viewer's heart.

He always takes people as the motif of painting, and raises the tension, pain and horror feelings conveyed by the characterization to a lofty realm. He once said, "I hope my paintings look like traces left by human beings when they pass by. They are memories that are already disappearing." His paintings reveal the pain in existence and the pitiful and terrible side of human nature, which can arouse people's thinking.

unit 2

Lucia Nogueira

Lucia Nogueira,《Mask》(1986)

Her work creates a disturbing sense of suspension and strangeness to everyday objects. She brings furniture, crates, plastic tubes and glass into mysterious and engaging conversations that seem to ask more questions than answers. As a Brazilian living in London, she spoke of the dislocation and questioning of living in a different culture, where the everyday and obvious can become confusing.

Lucia Nogueira, Mischief, 1995; Anchor, 1992

Lucia finds and creates unstable and powerful objects, placing vulnerability and delicacy with the weight of body and emotion. She talked about the sense of dislocation brought by different cultures, which has some relevance to my topic. She showed a sense of distance and dislocation of groups with everyday objects, which interested me a lot.

Juan muñoz

Juan muñoz, this is tomorrow, 2001

Juan muñoz's sculptural installations are like stage sets populated by maudlin characters, implying narratives of conspiracy, despair, and isolation. Despite the often-unsettling qualities of his work, Muñoz consistently acknowledged the emotional range of the human condition, from the absurd and irrational to the poignant and humorous. Shown individually and in groups, the figure—inspired by ventriloquist dummies, dwarves, and punching-bag clowns—is a constant presence in his work.

I am paying attention to the position and distance of the group, so his arrangement and arrangement of the characters are worthy of my learning. How to place the characters in a safe and uneasy position, and the appropriate sense of distance is what I pursue

Muñoz's sculptures often invite viewers to connect with them, making viewers feel as if they have discreetly become part of the artwork. His slab-gray or wax-colored monochrome figures created a wariness due to their lack of individuality, but this lack of individuality made the viewer uneasy and perhaps even uncomfortable. When asked about his career, Munoz would simply reply that he was a "storyteller." "I like to think of it as the space between each of us and the rest of the world," he says. "It's like that moment when you turn off the lights in your room and say, 'this is me, alone. '

Saul Steinberg

'We have masks in the traditional sense, masks brought by people's nationality, social class.  There is also a role mask, which is a mask that is constantly formed by people in the society in which they live. In order for people to play a role in society, they do not expose their true selves. '

People invented standard smiles, various standard mouth shapes, and eye shapes.  It is a stable mask, representing pleasure, happiness, and satisfaction. It is a public mask for people.  The nose is an antisocial part of us that has left us, revealing our true identity.  The eyes have learned all the tricks of dialogue, like hiding or misleading.  There is also a mouth, and the laughter from there is totally unreasonable, presumably for sudden courtesy.  But the nose is the only stationary part ... it is our ancestor, our instinct, a real animal.'

Various masks formed by people affect the development of intimate relationships. More and more people learn to hide their hearts. Many expressions are pretending, which also causes people's inner distance.

Aron Wiesenfeld

"I often feel isolated from the world."

"I found that the greenhouse is a terrible metaphor." The plants in it are separated from their original growth environment, much like astronauts on Mars."

Characters in Aron Wiesenfeld's works just show the back or show an expressionless face as if lost in a strange environment or intoxicated by the beauty of the surroundings.  In his works, often uses tunnels, railways, dusk, travel and other scenes and elements to express the theme of loneliness. Lonely and small human beings may be swallowed up by this world at any time.

I really like the lonely atmosphere he painted and the composition of his paintings.  I also pay attention to the theme of loneliness and try to put the character in a scene to make it look small and powerlessness. His works give me some inspiration.

Edward Hopper

"Perhaps I did unconsciously portray the loneliness of a big city.  " -Edward Hopper

1942 Nighthawks

This is the picture in Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks". The late-night restaurant is empty and the streets are even colder. Bright fluorescent lights are cold and shot at a few customers in the store. It seems that a person in black is hiding in the shadow, like a couple's indifferent men and women, not communicating. There is nothing in the waiter's eyes.

Although in the group, each isolated individual is so lonely. It is used to depict that we are living in the city today is also appropriate. The boring and lonely are all connected. I pay close attention to apathetic society and group loneliness. This is very close to his work. The quiet and lonely atmosphere of his works is worth studying.

Room in New York 1940

The empty city, the blank journey, the flesh trapped inside, and the soul desperate to flee, are the worlds that Hopper saw.  Born in the era of nothingness after World War I, it may be so, that he can always capture the moments that make people instantly snor.

The characters that can be polished from his works are fictitious, the same as mine: he painted the state of loneliness and worry of modern people.  And with the continuous development of technology, the modern world is gradually becoming more complicated.

What he is different from me is his way of expression. It shows this state in a more concrete way: someone is together but just playing with the phone with their head down(p1). Or a group of people meeting together but just holding a bottle of wine with their backs to the crowd(p2). Or even if two people face to face there is no conversation, only endless silence and embarrassment(p3). People seem to be used to living in masks.

Her works are most dark humorou. Many of her works reveal a sense of horror and insecurity. She seems to explore human desires, vulnerability and loneliness. This has a little bit to do with my exploration of human spiritual dilemmas. Although the subject matter is heavy, we all express it in a humorous way.

In her works, some objects cover her eyes and face, which makes people feel unstable and insecure. People gather together, but lack of eye contact leads to a sense of distance, and emotional contact becomes blurred. This treatment also gave me some inspiration.

She also made some animations in an infinite loop and displayed them on a flat painting. I think this form is particularly interesting and novel.

Djamel Tatah

He combines the traditional painting method with the contemporary color, and depicts the silent people with unique composition. There are individuals and groups in his paintings, which are very emotional. I can find the state and emotion of people in today's world from his paintings, including loneliness, indifference, pain, entanglement, hesitation and so on.

From his paintings of many people, I found that most of them share the same posture and expression, which is just like a state of the current society. When people enter the collective, they lose their uniqueness and gradually assimilate their behaviors and emotions.

This is very close to the theme of my research. We both focus on the state of the world and its impact on individuals and groups. His characterization of the characters and his treatment of the relationship between the individual and the collective gave me some inspiration.

David Shirley

I once saw his exhibition in Shanghai. He is a creative artist who is also involved in animation, illustration, oil painting and other aspects. His works are full of funny elements that make people laugh, which attracts me a lot. He is good at using black and white lines to depict the absurd state of people's existence. Geraint once mentioned that the black and white lines in my draft reminded him of David's black and white illustration, so he gave me some inspiration for creation.

His works many involves serious problems, such as death, anxiety, and he is just using an intuitive, unconscious approach to performance, and he was always able to simplify some irksome complex problems, to clarify the social problems in a simple form, and to express much of the absurdity and dreariness of our daily life. I also hope that I can use the simple and clear way  to show social problems.

He also made some animations. In this animation, I saw that a person is often compromised in the group. I was also paying attention to the relationship between the individual and the group. The general characteristics of a group are the disappearance of personality and the formation of a collective psychology: unconscious, low intelligence and so on.
