Unit 2

I've always liked to observe people's different emotional states in various situations and how they relate to and react to their surroundings. At this stage, I want to show the plight of contemporary people.

After unit 1, I became interested in the production of animation. I think that compared to plane painting, animation may increase the vividness and more able to express my ideals.I tried to use different materials, like pen, watercolor, oil pastel and more.

Due to the coronavirus, all of us can only stay at home. I believe many people have been hit, but they have no choice but to feel powerless to life, and at this time there will also be a lot of negative emotions.  But this extreme sense of loneliness and powerlessness has inspired me a lot.

At this stage, I want to use animation to explore some common problems, and show the inherent human nature, artificially built environment, and people suffering  Gloomy side.

stay alone

This is an animation that I planned in the unit 1. It shows that people are in a state of self-enclosure. I drew a figure curling up around me. It has been rotating in place, unable to resist, and finally sink.  The vortex represents the chaotic life state and people's sense of powerlessness.  This video is an infinite loop and also expresses people ’s inability to break free and change this state.

rainy days

Those delayed careers or studies, family members and loved ones who can’t meet each other thousands of miles away, dim rooms without the sun, and huddled up in the room alone, they all turned into little devil and got into our body while we were alone  then eat our mind.

Emotions are particularly evident on rainy days. A little bit of rain piled up like our curled up bodies, falling into confusion and dilemma.

I also tried to use figurative way to draw the movement and state of human body curl.

isolated island

There’re some meanings in this animation:

One form disappears and another regenerates. When a group disperses, it forms a new group. And the vortex represents chaotic life and crowds.

People are social animals, and loneliness can kill you. The disappearance of an island does not mean its death, it just melts into the ocean of society.

In a group situation, individuals give up independent critical thinking ability and let the spirit of the group replace their own spirit. Furthermore, the most rational person will act like an animal. So the individual gradually becomes a group. People go with the flow.

Sink

You suffocate in the water and you yearn for redemption, but you afraid that redemption will hurt your, so you choose to sink and fall into the abyss. It's the same with a lot of people and you just go with the flow.

Tetris life

I want to use classic tetris to show the plight and status of contemporary people:

If you choose to fit in with the crowd you will disappear, drift with the stream, and lose the uniqueness of the individual. In other words, the disappearance of the square does not mean the death, it just melts into the ocean of society. If you don't fit in you will be isolated because people are social animals and loneliness will kill you.

This form of subsidence also reflects people's powerlessness towards reality. Each square is pieced together by a human body, which slowly falls down in different states and postures, and then slowly transforms into squares, just like people integrate into a group, gradually losing their strong personality.

Tetris has no levels, and if you want to score higher, you have to play on an infinite loop. Infinite loop, meaning that there is no real sense of clearance, is the player to overcome all kinds of difficulties to continue to play. As in life, there is no escape from this cycle. On the road of life people are constantly challenging the limit, challenge themselves, there is no end. Mistakes accumulate and you need to work hard to make up for them.

In addition to making animation, I also tried to make a secondary creation on top of my painting to make the plane painting move and create a sense of vortex, which also created a visual effect of infinite circulation.

At the beginning, I tried to draw some sketches about the distance between people, trying to express a social dilemma of contemporary people: even if we face each other, we are still far away from each other.

Later,  I used the computer to draw some gifs, which used a funny and vivid way to express the relationship between the individual and  and groups, as well as the sense of distance and communication between people.
